Whats in Your Coffee?

WHAT IS IN YOUR COFFEE?

Lovers of coffee everywhere have all heard the controversial question asked, “What is the point in drinking decaf?” The majority of coffee drinkers enjoy the sense- pleasing benefits that coffee offers as well as the physical reaction that is attributed to the caffeine in coffee. The opposite groups of coffee drinkers also enjoy the aroma and flavor of coffee, but are more cautious of the physical reaction that caffeinated coffee produces. Due to health reasons, or simply favor of sleep, a rising majority of coffee drinkers are choosing decaffeinated coffee. Decaffeinated coffee not only provides an individual with the sense-pleasing benefits, but it also offers the health benefits, such as antioxidants, found in coffee.

Once a coffee lover has established that they will benefit from drinking decaffeinated coffee, the questioned that must then be asked is, “Which decaf method is most beneficial?” A few common decaf methods are the direct method, indirect method, triglyceride method, and Swiss water process. The controversies between the methods are whether or not chemicals are used, which chemicals are used, and whether or not the taste and aroma of the coffee is jeopardized. Most arguably the Swiss Water Process is the most beneficial method. Through the Swiss Water Process the coffee is decaffeinated 100% free of chemicals.

The Swiss Water Process was developed by the Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Company. To decaffeinate the coffee bean by the Swiss Water method, a batch of green (unroasted) beans is soaked in hot water, releasing caffeine. When all the caffeine and coffee solids are released into the water, the beans are discarded. The water then passes through a carbon filter that traps caffeine but lets the coffee solids pass through. The resulting solution, called "flavor-charged" water by the company, is then put in a similar filtration device, and new coffee beans are added. Since the flavor-charged water cannot remove any of the coffee solids from the new beans, only the caffeine is released. The process repeats, filtering out all the caffeine until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free. These beans are removed and dried, and thus retain most if not all of their flavour and smell.

Other decaffeinated processes use claims such as “water process” or “natural process”, when in actuality chemicals are used. Methylene chloride or ethyl acetate is used in processes like the Direct Method or the Indirect Method. Sometimes coffees which are decaffeinated using ethyl acetate are referred to as a natural process because ethyl acetate can be derived from various fruits or vegetables, but because of the impracticality of gathering natural ethyl acetate, the chemical used for decaffeination is synthetic.

Many companies affiliated with coffee have recognized that the Swiss Water method is the most beneficial and recognizable decaffeination process. The Coffee Beanery, a Michigan based company, provides Swiss Water Process decaffeinated coffee. The Coffee Beanery has many stores located nationally as well as internationally. Among many caffeinated coffee bean choices, the company also offers straight SWP coffees as well as several flavored SWP coffees. With SWP flavors such as Café Carmel, French Vanilla, Toasted Almond, and Michigan Cherry, any decaf coffee drinker will have their coffee needs met. Visit any location near you or order from the website at www.coffeebeanery.com. Coffee Beanery offers a flat rate of shipping for it's online customers of $5.00 for all orders!

Coffee Beanery is in the news!

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- The buy-one-get-one-free promo gives the following instructions: "Just say, can I have my Blizzard upside down, down right thick."

Another asks people to give a shout-out to The Coffee Beanery to be entered in a free coffee contest. Businesses such as the DQ Grill & Chill in Burton and The Coffee Beanery, based in Mt. Morris Township, are using creativity to fit promotions and marketing into 140 characters -- messages that quickly can reach hundreds of people.
A number of businesses from restaurants to ELGA Credit Union in Burton and the Genesee Valley shopping center in Flint Township have recently entered the social media stratosphere by launching free Twitter pages. They've followed a trend in recent years of business leaders and decision makers increasingly interacting on social networking sites.

"It's definitely getting our name out there," said Jeanelle Killian, who manages The Coffee Beanery's Twitter page (coffeebeanery1), which earlier this month had 691 followers or people who receive her tweets. The company also has a Facebook fan page.

"We have a lot of hits on our name. We have a lot of new customers."
The Coffee Beanery launched its Twitter page within the past few months and uses it to boost awareness of the brand and its products.
David Jenkins of Tampa, Fla. recently won one of the company's Twitter contests. He started following The Coffee Beanery when a friend told him about the specialty coffee company's contests.

Jenkins, who also follows Starbucks, Ikea and some independent businesses, said he's become a fan of The Coffee Beanery's coffee."I won a pound of coffee of my choosing by entering a contest where I checked out their Web page and mentioned which of their coffees I'd like to try with an @coffeebeanery1 in my tweet," Jenkins wrote in an e-mail to The Flint Journal.

He said companies that don't bomb people with ads on Twitter are effectively marketing to customers."I think companies that do this right are really doing a smart thing," he said.

Whether your business is big or small company, done right, Twitter can help your company, said Charlie Wollborg of Curve Detroit, an advertising, marketing and design firm in Pontiac.

"It's excellent for businesses who want to listen, for businesses who want to converse or promote," said Wollborg, who this week is a co-presentor at a Social Media 101 session at Automation Alley in Troy.
Wollborg said companies can monitor brand names on Twitter and see what people are saying about them just seconds ago.
"The easy thing about Twitter is it's instantaneous," he said.
He said Comcast has a small staff dedicated to following what people are saying about the cable company on Twitter (some people have thousands of followers who receive those posts) and offering help to anyone who is frustrated with their service.

You also can have conversations with people about topics that might pertain to your business such as an ice cream store looking for people tweeting about ice cream locally, Wollborg said. And restaurants can use Twitter for promoting things such as daily soup specials, he said.
But to be successful, you need a network of followers. You can gain those by using Web site such as nearbytweets.com to search for tweets near you, Wollborg said.

And remember to be personable and don't bombard people with "buy it now" messages all the time, Wollborg advises.
DQ Grill & Chill co-owner Scott Edmonds said he decided recently to launch a Twitter page to advertise specials for the Center Road location using DQBurton as the username. The first special went up on June 15 and he's got about 80 followers, some who are retweeting about the store's Twitter specials.
Edmonds said after a few weeks he'd had 30 people take advantage of the Twitter specials.
"It's still pretty new and fresh," he said.
His family owns Dairy Queen locations on Saginaw Street in Burton and on Hill Road in Grand Blanc Township and Twitter pages may be added for those stores, too.

The Coffee Beanery believes Twitter is bringing them some new online orders from places such as California where it doesn't have any stores, Killian said.
This fall, Killian will talk to franchisees about launching Twitter pages for their stores.
"It's fun and I'm hoping that more of our franchisees start doing that," she said. "I think it's a huge opportunity."

Kristen Herrick, marketing manager at Genesee Valley, said the center launched a Twitter page (Shop_GVC) and Facebook page at the end of June after planning its social media presence for a year.
The Twitter page is used to let the public know what specials are going on at mall retailers, Herrick said.

"It's a way for us to communicate those incentives, those promotions, new products almost instantaneously," she said, adding she hopes it drives traffic into the mall.
Herrick said messages go out on Twitter once or twice a day.
The Facebook page, already with more than 130 fans, shows pictures of the facility and includes posts on new stores and groups such as mall walkers.
Burton-based ELGA Credit Union also is on Twitter and Facebook, adding its pages over the past several months.

Debra Chaffins, e-marketing specialist for ELGA Credit Union, said she's using Twitter and Facebook differently.
"Facebook is about sending out the invitations to things that are happening," Chaffins said, citing events such as seminars and blood drives.
On Twitter under ELGAcu, the credit union tells its 290 followers (its members, other credit unions and others in the community) about things going on at the credit union or "things in the community that we want to share."

"Our Twitter is a little bit more on the marketing side," Chaffins said, adding she's sent tweets about Member2Member business discounts available for ELGA credit union members.
Chaffins said she sends messages out weekly.
"(Our) policy is it has to be relevant, timely and we don't want to overwhelm people," she said. "We don't want people to turn us off because we're giving a whole bunch of information that they could easily look up other places."

Join Coffee Beanery in supporting our troops this 4th of July

For those who have loved ones fighting overseas to protect our amazing country or for anyone who supports anyone in the military, please take time to read the press release below. Let us thank each and every soldier who sacrifices so much to safe guard The United States......

Coffee Beanery - Perking Up Troops Overseas
4th of July promotion to send coffee to military overseas

Flushing, MI – June 24, 2009 – To celebrate Independence Day this year, Coffee Beanery will continue to do something they have for years – Send specialty coffee to US troops who are serving overseas. Beginning June 29 Coffee Beanery customers can join their efforts and ship coffee to our troops for just $5.00 a pound.

Coffee Beanery ran the same offer to customers for a week around Memorial Day and got a great response. That week Coffee Beanery and their customers raised over 220 pounds of coffee that were sent to troops oversees through Operation Care Package.

The company decided to repeat the promotion for the 4th of July holiday. Customers can donate coffee by going to www.coffeebeanery.com or at participating Coffee Beanery locations. Customers have always been able to donate coffee on-line, but it was normally at the regular retail price. Coffee Beanery wanted to raise awareness that customers could donate coffee to be shipped and were thrilled that so many got involved. After getting great feedback, Coffee Beanery decided to make the offer again so that their customers could, once again, show their support by sending coffee to the troops for just $5.00 a pound.

Over the past seven years Coffee Beanery has sent thousands of pounds of specialty coffee to American troops serving overseas. The gesture has always been very appreciated and soldiers look forward to getting something from “back home.” For the week leading up to the 4th of July, Coffee Beanery is focused again on raising awareness that their customers can send coffee to those serving our country.

Founded by JoAnne and Julius Shaw in 1976, The Coffee Beanery is a privately held company that franchises and supports a network of upscale cafes, retail stores, carts and kiosks that specialize in serving the finest specialty Arabica coffee. The Coffee Beanery has nearly 150 locations globally. For more information on Coffee Beanery please visit http://www.coffeebeanery.com/.

Going ALL Hollywood

Going All Hollywood!

I don’t know if it is my warmth and personal charm or my dashing good looks that got me the part, but I have recently been part of the cast of the show 24 on FOX.

I was pretty excited to get the part, but this isn’t the first time Hollywood has come calling. I’ve been in the hands of other great actors of our time. Julia Roberts had her hands all over me in Erin Brockovitch and I helped to comfort Clint Eastwood in Million Dollar Baby. I’ve helped Larry David come up with some great ideas for Curb Your Enthusiasm. I’ve been on Wheel of Fortune and many other game shows, making winners happier than they could have ever imagined.

I’ve been on some other hit TV shows like Scrubs and Strong Medicine too, but 24 is pretty huge right now, so I thought I’d let everyone know where you all can see my acting skills. Please let me know if you see me in anything else that you have watched. I do it all for my fans!

Coffee Beanery supports the military!

At Coffee Beanery we have been sending coffee to our military serving our country oversees for years. Our customers have even gotten involved and can donate coffee to our troops while they shop for coffee on our web store at http://www.coffeebeanery.com/. For every pound donated by our customers Coffee Beanery Matches it!! Donated coffee is then sent to the non- profit group Operation Care Packages to be sent overseas to our military. We also send 15lbs of coffee and related products to 5 servicmen and women each month who are deployed overseas. I'm posting a couple of e-mails between our office and one of our soldiers in Iraq because it really makes our day when we hear this from our soldiers and I thought you would enjoy it too.

We want to say "Thank You" to everyone serving in the military, and we consider it a privilege to send coffee to them while they serve overseas!

From the SGT in Iraq:

Thank you very much for all the coffee. We all love it very much. I am very sorry that it has taken me so long to write an email thanking you and everyone at the Coffee Beanery. Things here can get pretty crazy and I can't seen to find the time to write people back in the States as often as I would like. I have one flavor request as of right now as that is the Hazelnut. Could you also throw in just a couple of decafs. If they are the large bags just one would be fine but if it is the smaller two of them. Thanks again.

From our Orders Department:

I just sent out the order for you for this month but I will keep this email and send out decaf. Hazelnut to you the next time... I assume you are a decaf. Drinker.... Do you want me to send you more decaf than regular on your next orders? Let me know and I will be happy to send you whatever you need! Thank you and all the soldiers overseas fighting to protect our country....

From the SGT in Iraq:

That sounds great. I am actually a "regular" drinker but there are a couple of soldiers who drink decaf because they can't have caffeine so I thought that they should be able to experience the wonderful coffee from the Coffee Beanery as well as everyone else. I was looking at the list and for the decaf drinkers the Chocolate Raspberry, and French Vanilla. I would love to try the Double Dutch Fudge, Hawaiian Coconut, Chocolate Raspberry and the English Toffee & Cream. I had forgotten about the list until after I had sent the first email. All the soldiers are loved the mugs and all the coffee that the Coffee Beanery is sending. Thank you again.

Let's Meet for Coffee~

What is coffee to us?

Coffee is like a fingerprint because we each take it so differently: in a large or small cup, glass or mug, with/without milk or just a drop, sweetened or no sugar, strong or weak, it really doesn’t matter.

At the same time, coffee is the biggest common denominator we have with billions of people around the world waking up to its awesome aroma every day.

On a personal level, coffee is the answer that reacts right away and motivates us by providing strength, energy and renewal. It is a powerful desire, a yearning that cannot be denied.Coffee is the experience happening right now and it continues to wash over each and every one of us that have already experienced everything and want more.

For all of us at Coffee Beanery, coffee is a way to learn about new cultures, new people and new tastes from around the world. We would like to share this world with you. When we drink coffee we want to continue to experience, taste, respond and create more and more new moments.

Coffee moments.
